Thank you for visiting this project. My name is Augusta Pendergast, and I am a rising Senior at Gettysburg College majoring in Philosophy. “How Do We Fit in” is a product of the Digital Scholar Summer Fellowship at Musselman Library at Gettysburg College. The fellowship trains students of the humanities in digital research and design in order to create projects that live on the web and engage with a pubic audience.
I have taken multiple literature and philosophy classes where the ideas of the modern and postmodern periods are highly relevant. While engaging with these topics through these classes, I was always surprised at how important they were to our everyday lives. I would see how themes of these eras affected myself and others in very concrete ways. I especially found the evolving ideas of the self and how we allow ourselves to interact with the outside world intriguing.
However, the novels that we read in these classes were written by highly successful and influential writers. I was interested to see how the themes of the modern and postmodern affected college students, specifically Gettysburg College students. Because of these interests, I decided to research student written works for signs of the modern and postmodern. This project is meant to explore these eras through the culture of Gettysburg College. It is also meant to explore works from the last three years in order to understand any change that has occurred after recent developments in politics and culture in the United States.
This project would not have been possible without the help of Gettysburg College’s Special Collections and College Archives. Through Special Collections, I was able to gain access to many student works in history that are not well known throughout campus.
I would also like to give a special thanks to Clint Baugess and the DSSF Librarian Committee for their continued guidance and support.
Please feel free to comment or contact me directly with any questions or concerns in reference to the project.
